The Seven SamuraiIn 16th century Japan, a defenseless village nestled in the hills is constantly besieged by hooligans. The farmers know that when the rice ripens the thugs will return, so a small group goes to town to employ a pack of hired killers. But the samurai just laugh at the paltry wages -- lodgings and a daily bowl of rice -- that the poor village men offer. Only Kambei, a brave elder samurai, takes up their cause. From the many poor warriors who walk the streets, he slowly puts together his team of fighters: four seasoned samurai, one eager apprentice and an alcoholic. Upon reaching the village, the samurai learn that the farmers fear them as much as they fear the enemy. But the samurai teach them courage and cooperation, and soon the farmers become warriors who can take care of themselves... while the samurai become legends. A forerunner to the American western "The Magnificent Seven " Academy Award Nominations: Best (Black-and-White) Art Direction-Set Direction, Best (Black-and-White) Costume Design.
