"Have you
ever loved your wife so much that you thought of killing her?" When
Tex (Woody Allen), a kosher butcher, catches his unfaithful wife Candy in
the act, he kills her in a fit of jealousy -- and then, concealing his deed
-- he carves her up and attempts to bury the evidence in the New Mexico
desert. When a blind woman stumbles upon Candy's severed hand her eyesight
is miraculously restored, and she eagerly delivers "The Hand Of The
Virgin" to the town priest Padre Leo (David Schwimmer), who is in the
middle of a stormy romance with the beautiful prostitute Desi (Maria Grazia
Cucinotta). When the priest places the hand inside the shrine of the church,
the hand begins to make miracles, and as the news spreads, Mayor Machado
(Cheech Marin) organizes a business and converts the town into "The
Miracle Capital Of The Southwest." Despite the pursuing Sheriff Bobo
(Keifer Sutherland) revealing Tex's crime, the townspeople conspire to keep
it a collective secret because -- as inexplicable as it may seem -- there
is no doubt that the miracles are absolutely real. Picking Up The Pieces
is a hilarious black-humored comedy with elements of magical realism.
