After her 17-year-old
son, Esteban, dies in a car accident, devastated single mother
Manuela (Cecilia Roth) leaves Madrid for Barcelona to find Esteban's
long estranged father. Once there, she encounters a bevy of kooky
characters - a lesbian actress (Marisa Paredes), a transvestite
prostitute (Antonia San Juan), and a pregnant nun (Penelope Cruz)
- who soon make up her support system.
