maiden Kate Winslet plays Ruth Baron, a free-wheeling 20-year-old
Australian woman who travels to India, where she falls under
the spell of a charismatic cult leader Baba Chidaatma and becomes
one of the faithful. Her worried family hires American deprogrammer
P.J. Waters (Harvey Keitel) to bring her back to them. After
receiving a fake story about her gravely ill father, Ruth returns
home where Waters attempts to extricate her from the hold of
the Baba. Things turn strange, however, when the deprogrammer
discovers that Ruth is not easily swayed by his rhetoric, and
soon he finds himself questioning his own belief systems and
falling under her spell. The two lock in a battle of mind control,
and despite his duty to deprogram, he becomes enchanted with
her spirituality, as well as her sexuality, and they engage in
a passionate affair. Directed by Jane Campion (The
Piano, The
Portrait of a Lady), the tale is based on a book written
by Jane and her sister Anna Campion.
