Two ranchers (Harrelson and Crudup) in post World War
II Mexico fall for a married woman (Patricia Arquette).
Acclaimed director Stephen Frears ("The
Grifters," "Dangerous
Liaisons") helms the film version of the admired novel
that for years Sam
Peckinpah tried to get made. The film is an intimate story
of the enduring bond of friendship between two hard-living men,
set against a sweeping backdrop: the American West, post-World
War II, in its twilight. Pete (Billy Crudup of the upcoming "Without
Limits" and Gramercy's 1999 release "Waking The Dead")
and Big Boy (Woody Harrelson) are masters of the prairie, but
ultimately face trickier terrain: the human heart. Patricia Arquette
co-stars as the woman who will eventually come between the two
men. Also starring are Penelope Cruz (one of Spain's brightest
young stars), Willie Nelson, and Sam Elliott ("The
Big Lebowski"). The film is directed by Stephen Frears
from Walon Green's screenplay adaptation of Max Evans' novel.
The producers are Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Rudd Simmons.
Martin Scorsese serves as executive producer. Cast: Woody Harrelson,
Billy Crudup, Patricia Arquette, Penelope Cruz, Sam Elliott,
Willie Nelson.
