Nick Chen (Chow Yun-Fat) is one of the NYPDs most decorated
officers. The first Chinese-born immigrant on the force, Chen
has used his close ties with a group of Chinese businessmen known
as the Triads to rise through the ranks. Now, a gold shield detective
and the star officer on the city's highly touted Asian Gang Unit;
its Chen's job to keep the peace in Chinatown.
But a turf war has erupted between the Triads and the newly
arrived and brutally violent Fukienese Dragons. As the precarious
peace in Chinatown is interrupted, the NYPD beefs up the Asian
Gang Unit with a new recruit: an idealistic cop (Wahlberg), who
is unaware of how power and influence have compromised his superiors.
When the Tongs boldly attempt to corrupt this young officer,
Chen is forced to realign his loyalties.
A hard-hitting tale of deception, violence and betrayal in
New York City's Chinatown, the film teams Chow Yun-Fat, who achieved
international stardom in films that rewrote the book on movie
action with Mark Wahlberg, fresh from the triumphs of Boogie
Nights and The
Big Hit. The film is directed by James Foley, whose strong
visual style and sensitive direction of actors have been displayed
in such acclaimed films as At
Close Range, After
Dark, My Sweet and Glengarry
Glen Ross.
The Corruptor features an outstanding ensemble cast that includes
Ric Young (Seven
Years in Tibet) as Henry Lee, the smiling embodiment of the
seductive power of evil; Paul Ben-Victor (A
Civil Action) as an FBI agent determined to put Chen behind
bars for corruption; Elizabeth Lindsey (Bulworth)
as Louise Deng, a member of the Asian Gang Unit; and Brian Cox
(The
Boxer) as Danny's father, an ex-cop with a destructive gambling
habit.
The film also highlights the talents of Byron Mann (Red
Corner) as Bobby Vu, a young killer who is clawing his way
up the criminal ladder; Andrew Pang (The
Substance of Fire) as Chen's partner Willy Chung; and newcomer
Jon Kit Lee as Jack, a young thug caught in the middle of Nick
Chen's war on the gang that is bringing a new brand of cold-blooded
violence to the streets of Chinatown.
