In 1849 during the California Gold Rush, after trekking west
to seek his fortune, a drunken Daniel Dillon (Peter Mullan) sells
his wife (Nastassja Kinski) and daughter (Sarah Polley) for gold.
Twenty years later, they find him in the town of Kingdom Come,
where he is rich and a respected leader. Based on Thomas Hardy's
1886 novel The Mayor of Casterbridge.
