In this darkly comic view of the coming
future, bureaucratic cog Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) dreams of
escaping the totalitarian machine that society has become. He
fantasizes about joining a beautiful woman with silver wings
in the clouds, far away from this world. One day, he glimpses
a female truck driver (Kim Greist) who resembles his fantasy,
and he attempts to win her love -- attempts that end up dragging
him into the underworld of anti-government terrorists and radicals.
Academy Award Nominations: Best (Original) Screenplay, Best Art
