When the owner
of a Texas saloon (Dan Hedaya) suspects his wife (Frances McDormand
in her film debut) of infidelity, he hires a disreputable private
eye (M. Emmet Walsh) to kill both her and her lover (John Getz).
The private dick accepts the deal then sizes up the situation.
Realizing that he's stumbled into a set of circumstances that
could easily be turned to his benefit, the hired killer decides
to pull a double-cross. And soon the four protagonists become
trapped in a fragile geometry of deceit, murder, guilt, duplicity
and misunderstanding -- all connected by the nightmarish and
inevitable logic of deadly fate. Feature debut of filmmaking
brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize
at the Sundance Film Festival in its inaugural year.
