Steven Spielberg took on this
project, which had been in various stages of development for
almost twenty years for Stanley
Kubrick to direct. Based on a short story by Brian Aldiss,
this science fiction tale occurs about fifty years hence, after
the greenhouse effect has fulfilled its dire promise by melting
vast sections of the Earth's polar icecaps and left the coastal
cities of the world largely submerged. To cope with this new
world order, mankind now relies more and more on technology,
including a new, highly sophisticated generation of computers
which are self-aware of their own existence. In other words,
they possess an artificial intelligence, or A.I.
