Paul Schrader
(Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) directs, from his own screenplay,
the transporting tale of a man's attempt to redeem his abused
soul. Nick Nolte (The Thin Red Line) plays Wade Whitehouse, a
man long-divorced and estranged from his young daughter. He spends
his long cold days and nights as a snow-plow operator and policeman.
But when a wealthy man is killed in an apparent accident, Wade
is convinced that it is murder. He seizes the investigation as
a chance to right some wrongs and to find some self-respect.
But as he unravels the mystery he, himself, begins to unravel.
AFFLICTION features Oscar-caliber performances by Nolte and by
James Coburn (Maverick). It is adapted from the acclaimed novel
by Russell Banks (The Sweet Hereafter). |
